Southern California Junior Tour Begin’s it 2016 Season

The 2016 Southern California Junior Tour (SCPGAJRTOUR) kicked off it’s 2016 season with the Spring Toyota Tour Cup Qualifying School at Menifee Lakes CC, Menifee Lakes, CA, on February 6 and 7.

The Girls Qualifier had 84 player’s vying for a spot on the coveted Toyota Tour. Catherine Yu, shot 83-80 (163) to finish in a tie 37th place, while her teammate at Walnut High School, Michelle Xu, shot 84-81 (165) to place in a tie for 40th place. Reina Tain shot a pair of 84’s (168) and placed tied for 49th. Karina Guo shot 89-83 (172) and finished in a tie for 62nd place.

In the Boy’s Qualifier, Benjamin Lee, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, shot an opening round of 81 and then rebounded in the second round with a solid, -3 under par 69 for a two day total of 150. Ben finished in a tie for 23rd place. In his opening round he struggled with 4 double bogies and 4 bogies. On the positive side, Ben had a birdie and an eagle. Ben “reloaded” on the second day and was much more consistent, shooting a 69. Ben shot even par on the front nine with a bogey and a birdie. He “lit” up the back side with 4 birdies and a lone bogey for a -3 under 33.

Umbert Caseres, playing in his first qualifier, struggled with a 91-97 (188) while Derek Xu, a sixth grader, shot 105-101 (206).

This was the first event of the year and the player’s have not competed in tournament’s since the end of November, in most case’s. It will take them an event or two to get back into the rhythm of playing tournament golf.
