Joyce Kim leads West Jr. Open

Joyce Kim of Carlsbad, Ca., leads after the first round of the AJGA’s West Junior Open. The event is being contested at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Ca. Joyce shot 37-35 72 to lead by one shot over Veronica Valerio, Temecula, Ca.

Joyce is a 2011 graduate. Joyce and her coach, George Pinnell, have been rebuilding her swing to get it more on plane to control the amount of side spin she produces from her path and club face position at impact. Joyce and George got together after the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines, where Joyce was the standard bearer for Jae Choi, another one of George’s players, who was competing in the Open.

Joyce is not only an outstanding player but she is gifted academically. She has sights on becoming valedictorian of her graduating class in 2011.
