SCPGA Bridgestone Summer Championship

The Summer SCPGA Bridgestone Championship was played August 24-25, 2013 at Indian Wells Golf Resort, Indian Wells, California. Student’s who are being coached at the George Pinnell Golf Academy performed well in the two day event hosted by Bridgestone.

In the Girls 12-14 division, Ali Morallos held the lead after the first round with a three over par 75. Ali continued her solid play into day 2 but a bogey on 8 followed by a double on 9 in the final day cost Ali the title. The talented young player rallied to shoot a one over par 36 on the back side of the final round to hold onto 3rd place with a two day total of, 75-79 (154), a shot behind Y. Shin, Irvine, CA 76-77 (153) and two shot’s behind the winner H. Ko, Anaheim, CA, who shot 78-74 (152).

Felicia “Fish” Chang and Katherine “The Kat” Muzi, tied for 6th place at 156. Felicia told her coach, George Pinnell, that she should have finished stronger because she “chunked” a shot on her last hole to make a bogey and cost her a tie for 4th place. Pinnell was pleased with Felicia’s play over the weekend because she had a single double in two day’s of play and limited her mistake’s to bogey’s.

Katherine shot a pair of 78’s coming off a good showing on the AJGA Junior All-Star event in West Bloomfield, MI., to tie with Felicia at 156. Katherine had a pair of double’s in the two day competition paired with a pair of birdie’s that continued her solid play this summer.

In the Boys 9-11 division, Sebastian “Seabass” Vallejo, Torrance, CA., tied for first place with an outstanding score of 37-39 (76) to tie with R. Villarama, Glendale, CA. Sebastian changed coach’s recently and has undergone a swing change to eliminate his dreaded “chicken wing” that has haunted him for several year’s. Both Sebastian and his coach are very pleased with his performance.

In the Girls 9-11 division, Sherilyn Villanueva, Stanton, CA, shot 40-46 (86) to finish in 6th place. Sherilyn has been making steady improvement throughout the summer and is looking forward to more improvement as she grow’s physically.

In JDL action, Sarah Taghaboni, Chino Hills, CA, shot 41 to finish in first place at the JDL Summer Series @ Scholl Canyon. In other JDL action, Mylan Hirata, finished in a tie for 4th place the JDL Summer Series @ Pico Rivera with a 40 in the Girls 12 and over. In the Girls 11 & under, Mitzi Duarte shot a 36 to tie for first place while Ryan Toh shot 51 in the JDL Boys 11 & under.

Congratulation’s to all player’s who worked so hard over the summer to improve their skill set and play on the SCPGA Junior Tour and AJGA Tour!!
