Crystal Wang, Diamond Bar, CA, battled Katherine “The Kat” Muzi in the Toyota Tour Cup Series @ Olivas Links, Ventura, CA. Crystal won her first Toyota Tour Cup event by posting round’s of 70-72 (142) -2. Katherine shot 73-70 (143) -1 to tie for second with K. Chung who shot 69-74 (143).
On the first day, Crystal shot -3 on her front side in the opening round but a double bogey on 16 slowed her down until she birdied the par 5, 18th hole for a back side +1, 37 and a 70. Katherine shot even par on the front side of the first day and a +1 on her back side for a +1, 37 and a 73 for the day.
The second day was a little more exciting as Crystal started off with par, birdie, bogey, eagle and a par, before making bogies on 5,7 and 8 for a front side 37. She settled down on her back side with a bogey and two birdies for a -1, 35 and an even par 72. Kat started a little slow, with bogies on 2 and 3, but recovered quickly (Kat like} with birdies on 4 and 5 before paring out for a 36 on the front side. She birdied 10, bogied 12, made pars on 13-16 before putting pressure on Crystal with two closing, back to back birdies on 17 and 18. Crystal responded strongly by birding 18 to win by a stroke over The Kat and Chung.
Crystal and Katherine are both long time student’s of George Pinnell. Katherine’s father, Steve, quipped, “you had Win and Place, in the horse race this weekend in Ventura.” Steve also commented that “he and Katherine are both happy for Crystal in her first TOC victory, because she work’s so hard.” Sportsmanship is alive and well!
