Derek Kim, Irvine, CA, shot a 72 to finish in second place at the SCPGA’s Brookside Fall event in Pasadena, CA. Gunnar Murray (appropriate name) shot a 68 to win the event at the storied Brookside Golf Club, that is located adjacent to the Rose Bowl.
Derek got off to a slow start with 4 bogies in his first 7 hole’s. The determined young player then made birdies on two of his next four hole’s before making his final bogey on twelve. Derek played the final six hole’s in -1 under par with a birdie on 16.
Sam Cho shot 79 and finished in a tie for 15th place. Sam was playing well at +2 over par before running into a wall on the finishing hole’s where he finished 7, 8 and 5 to lose 7 stroke’s in the 3 finishing hole’s. Par’s on those final hole’s would have put Sam into a tie for 3rd place in the Boys 12-14 Division. Jomar Veloso shot 88 and finished 31st, while Umbert (Umbie) Caseres, shot 89 for 34th place.
Derek Xu, shot a 44 and finished in a tie for 7th in the Boys 9-11 Division.
Andrea Han finished in a tie for 3rd place in the Girls 14-18 Division with a 79. She birdied the second hole before a double on three and consecutive bogies on four through 7 put her at +5 going into the eighth hole. Andrea played the final eleven hole’s in 3 over par. Andrea is going to visit Vassar College this week on an “official” recruiting trip.
At Whittier Narrows in Rosemead, California, Yugo Koshiishi, finished in a tie for 4th place with a +5, 77 in the Boys 15-18 Division. Yugo had a birdie, a double and 4 bogies to round out his 77. he played his final 7 holes in one over par. Sam Cho, shot 81 and finished in a tie for 18th in the Boys 12-14 Division. David Cho, finished in a tie for 4th place with a 40 in the Boys 9-11 Division. David got off to a “hot” start with birdies on one and two before reeling off 5 bogies in his remaining 7 hole’s.
At the initial 2015 Southern California Junior Amateur Golf Championship, played at Pacific Palms Resort (Industry Hills), Sean Maruyama, shot 68-69 (137) along with Edwin Kuang to get into a playoff. Sean won the playoff on the second hole. Matthew Huo, shot 74-76 (150) on the “Ike” course to finish in a tie for 32nd. Newport Laparojkit shot 75-80 (155) to finish in a tie for 58th place.
Angelina Kim, shot 67-70 (137) on the “Babe” course to win the Girls Division. Mylan Hirata, finished in a tie for 43rd place with 77-82 (159).
In JDL action, Bella Yang from Chino Hills, CA, continued her good play by finishing in a tie for 2nd with a 36 at Pico Rivera Municipal Golf Course. Bella was playing well until she made a triple and a double bogey on six and seven causing her to fall into a tie for second. A double and a bogey on those two hole’s would have won the event for Bella. The good new’s is that Bella consistently is putting herself into a position to be able to have a chance to win. As we all know, you cannot win them all.
