Women’s Golf HANAHAN, S.C. – The Illinois women’s golf team kicked off its 2022-23 season with a tied-for-12th place finish at the Cougar Classic after carding a 54-hole total of 862 (+10) at Yeamans Hall Club. The Illini were +7 (291) in today’s final round.
Graduate student Crystal Wang picked up right where she left off last season, finishing tied for 13th. Dating back to the end of the 2021-22 campaign, Wang has finished in the Top 15 in four-straight events. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native posted a 68 (-3) today, picking up three birdies in her bogey-free round. Wang carded a 210 (-3) over her 54 holes, posting back-to-back even-par rounds of 71 on Monday.
“It was a strong final round for Crystal leading to another solid finish for her,” said head coach Renee Sloan. “There’s a lot to be gained from this event for the entire team to aid in our preparation for Oklahoma.”
Sophomore Lexanne Halama posted a final-round 2-over 73 for a 54-hole total 214 (+1) to finish in a tie for 31st. Her opening round 67 set the lowest round round of her career. Sophomore Alise Knudson and freshman Mattie Frick rounded out the scoring the Orange and Blue. Knudson shot a final round 1-over 72 and finished in a tied for 52nd with a 219 (+6) total. The Dallas native shot a career-low 70 in yesterday’s second round. Frick, making her Illini debut, carded a final round of 82 (+11) and tied for 82nd with a 54-hole total of 226 (+13).
Junior Isabel Sy finished in a tie for 85th after shooting a final round 78 (+7) to finish the tournament with a 227 (+14).
Ole Miss took home the tournament title with a 54-hole score of 839 (-13), with Clemson (840), College of Charleston (849) and Florida State (850) rounding out the top four. The Rebels’ Andrea Lignell captured the individual title with a 9-under 204.
Illinois next heads to the Schooner Fall Classic at the Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla., on September 24-26.
